Lora Hays

Playing Your Way Through Tough Problems:
When Talking Just Won't Work

Lora Hays is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Play Therapist. She is currently Executive Vice President of Cancer Support Community Central Indiana. Lora has been practicing play therapy with children and their family members since 1996. In addition to her group and individual work with children affected by cancer, she has helped children with burn injury, domestic violence, and behavioral and adaptation issues. Her primary specialization has been helping children with trauma, grief and loss. Lora is an adjunct professor teaching masters level classes on play therapy theory and techniques and also regularly supervises students seeking experience in play therapy. In addition to teaching and counseling, Lora has helped author publications like What Do I Tell the Kids?, a book about what to tell your children about cancer along with several other educational and helpful materials.

Lora's keynote is titled, Playing Your Way Through Tough Problems: When Talking Just Won't Work. One of the biggest benefits of using play therapy is that children use play naturally. From the moment they are born, children use play to learn about the world and explore their place in it. Play therapy diminishes the resistance many children have to traditional therapy and gives them a fun way to open up and explore their thoughts and behaviors. Lora's session will introduce you to play therapy materials and how best to use them in the elementary setting. Not only will you have some fun, but you will walk away with some ready to use ideas!
