Olivia Carter and Brian Coleman

Keynote Speaker
Friday, November 10th | 8:00 a.m.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

What do school counseling, professional wrestling, and hockey have in common? They all require a level of intention, strategy, and passion! Brian Coleman and Olivia Carter, 2019 and 2021 ASCA School Counselors of the Year, will use their somewhat surprising athletic fandoms to help you upgrade your advocacy efforts in support of your students! Game on!

Participants will:

  • Review the advocacy elements of a comprehensive school counseling program
  • Identify advocacy opportunities in their local communities
  • Strategize ways to take their advocacy efforts to the next level

SPEAKER BIOS:

She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in School Counseling from Southeast Missouri State University. Olivia is currently serving as Past-President of the Southeast Missouri School Counselor Association. She also serves on the Missouri School Counselor Association Board of Directors, Programming Committee, and has been recognized as an Emerging Leader. In 2019 she was recognized as the Missouri School Counselor of the Year, and she is honored to have been recognized as the 2021 School Counselor of the Year by the American School Counselor Association. In her eleven years of working in public education, she has written for Forbes, collaborated with Education Week, and served on panels for the Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Education. Being a mother to two young children has ignited Olivia’s passion for equity-centered, trauma-informed comprehensive school counseling programs.

Mr. Brian Coleman was the 2019 National School Counselor of the Year and the first African-American winner of this prestigious honor. He was also a 2019 Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Upstander Award recipient for his commitment to LGBTQA+ youth advocacy. He is in his ninth year with Jones College Prep where he has served as Counseling Department Chair for five years. At Jones, Mr. Coleman has overseen counseling programming for seniors and freshmen, sophomore sexual health education, JCP’s student mentorship program, and the school’s LGBTQA+ student organization JonesPride. In recent years, he has also participated in DePaul University’s “Here We Do” and McDonald’s “Black and Positively Golden” promotional campaigns. He has also contributed to pieces for CNBC, Forbes, Teen Vogue, and NPR among others. Coleman is a proud graduate of Northwestern University as well as DePaul University where he was named the College of Education’s 2019 Alumni of the Year (and, recently, became an Adjunct Instructor!) He also serves on the Educational Advisory Board for Responsibility.org and as the President of the Illinois School Counselor Association. REIMAGINING SELF-CARE: DEVELOPING A  CULTURE OF WELLNESS

Dr. Evisha Ford

Featured Breakout Speaker
Thursday, November 9th

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Educational leaders deal with so many things daily: budgets, compliance, hiring, & conflict resolution, etc. These tasks are overwhelming. This presentation is designed as a reminder that in addition to the daily tasks that make a school/department function, leaders also have to ensure an environment for teachers & students that is a positive, caring one. This clears the way for the real work to occur which is preparing students for the future.

This workshop is grounded in the most recent research on trauma informed care. The presentation applies the principles from these models to leadership strategies. This session will prepare educators to apply research to decision making.

Session Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the impact of school climate on practitioner performance & student outcomes.
  • Participants will develop strategies & practice models to apply that positively impact school climate.
  • Participants will internalize the power of a culture of wellness.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Evisha Ford, LCSW is the Founding Executive Director of iCan Dream Center, a therapeutic school in Illinois that serves neurodiverse learners and their families. She began her career serving inner-city homeless youth in Chicago. She is a former Assistant Superintendent, Director of Special Education, and Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership. She specializes in trauma-compassionate leadership and organizational wellness. Dr. Evisha is the author of Benches in the Bathroom: Leading a Physically, Emotionally, and Socially Safe School Culture.

RETHINKING COLLEGE COUNSELING TO FIT THE REALITIES OF SCHOOL COUNSELING TODAY

Mark Salisbury

Featured Breakout Speakers
Thursday, November 9th

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

The dramatic increase in mental health issues and SEL needs among students since the pandemic has demanded substantially more time and energy from school counselors. Already significantly constrained by outsized caseloads, this increased demand on counselor’s time has further highlighted the need to rethink many of the other responsibilities historically expected of school counselors. One aspect ripe for a rethink is college planning guidance.

This highly interactive workshop will demonstrate how reframing the intended outcomes of college planning – for students as well as for high schools – in light of the now critical importance of financial fit and affordability, and applying a Solution-Based Therapy framework to college counseling, can dramatically improve the effectiveness and efficiency of college planning guidance for school counselors, students, and families.

The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the flaws in traditional college counseling approaches and an introduction to the underlying premises and prior applications of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (or review, for those who might already be familiar with SFBT). Then workshop participants will engage in a series of role-playing scenarios, followed by small group debriefs and larger group discussion, to examine how prioritizing outcomes that account for financial fit and affordability while applying an SFBT framework can better empower students and families while improving the quality of college guidance provided across large caseloads.

Session Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the realities – particularly financial – of what students and families face in the college admissions process
  • Participants will develop an understanding of the most crucial factors that shape educational success after high school
  • Participants will develop an understanding of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) applied to college counseling
  • Participants will develop basic comfort applying an SFBT framework to college planning guidance
  • Participants will practice applying this approach at two key moments during the college admissions process

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Mark Salisbury is a nationally-renowned author, speaker, and educator whose work focuses on student success, college admissions, and price transparency in higher education. His work has been featured by the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Forbes, NBC, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and NPR. He is also co-founder and CEO of TuitionFit, a crowdsourcing platform that enables the public to create a database of real college prices. In addition, he regularly conducts professional development for school counselors and college access organizations on rethinking the college planning process to ensure that all students enroll at a college that fits their financial circumstances. Mark earned his PhD from the University of Iowa and holds additional degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Kansas. Before launching TuitionFit, he was the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Institutional Research at Augustana College in Illinois, and a Board member for the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium. Over his 25 years in higher education, Mark has also held positions as a university instructor, student advisor, admissions counselor, and soccer coach.

In addition to his work in higher education, Mark has been a professional musician, a stand-up comedian, an improv theater performer, and a workshop facilitator for educators on how to apply the principles of improvisation to improve teaching and learning. Mark lives in Davenport, Iowa, with his wife, two sons, and five cats (MEOW!).
