Julia Cook

Julia Cook, M.S. is a award-winning children’s author, counselor, and parenting expert. She has presented in thousands of schools and speaks at education and counseling conferences nationally and internationally. Julia has published almost one hundred children’s books on a wide range of character and social development topics, and regularly contributes to print and television media about these topics. The goal behind Cook’s work is to actively involve young people in fun, memorable stories and teach them to become lifelong problem-solvers. Inspiration for her books comes from working with children and carefully listening to counselors, parents, and teachers, in order to stay on top of needs in the classroom and at home. Cook has the innate ability to enter the worldview of a child through storybooks, giving children both the “what to say” and the “how to say it.”

After going through the official ALiCE training, I cannot recommend this book enough. It helps children to understand why we need to be proactive and prepared in case the worst ever could happen. I hate having to think about these drills and preparation with my kindergarten students, but this book helps explain it to them on their level without being scary. If your school is moving towards ALiCE strategies (which I totally recommend) then this is the book for you!

Applause to Julia Cool for crating an educational story for students on how to handle a lockdown, evacuation or a dangerous person on campus. The genius here is how she turned a familiar story into a “training” to enhance the Alice Drill concepts which makes a scary topic less scary. Our students and communities do need to be prepared and this book is a great start to educating and discussing these sensitive topics. I recommend this book as a read aloud and a educational tool to start the school year.
