Dan St. Romain

1. Positive Behavior Principles

Dan St. Romain

SPEAKER BIO: Dan is a national educational consultant who provides staff development and consultative services to educators K-12. Dan is passionate about helping individuals shift their perspective on behavior, understanding the best ways to provide support given the challenges posed in today's society. He regularly presents on topics impacting school climate, brain-based instruction, developmentally appropriate educational practices and presentation skills. Dan's overwhelming strength is his skill as a presenter. Although his sessions are exceedingly interactive and engaging, his greatest asset lies in his ability to offer participants rich insight into the connectedness between educational practices and student behavior.

ABOUT THIS SESSION: Although behaviors in the school system have changed a great deal in the past few decades, our strategies for supporting those behaviors have not. By examining all the information we have learned about the brain, we are in a better position to understand how to best create long-term behavior change in our students. In this session, participants will learn nine principles for positively shaping the behavior of our students. This information has specific implications on both the classroom and school-wide level.

Julia Taylor

2. An Introduction to Trauma-Informed School Counseling

Julia Taylor

SPEAKER BIO: In addition to being the author of six books, Dr. Julia V. Taylor is also an assistant professor at the University of Virginia. She was previously the Dean of Student Services for the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, a public, all girls' school located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Originating from the Washington, DC area, Julia received her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Health Education from George Mason University. She received her master's degree in Psychology with a concentration in School Counseling from Marymount University. Julia received her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University in Counselor Education and Supervision.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:  A growing number of students we work with have experienced trauma. Research suggests that childhood trauma can significantly alter brain development, which can negatively impact student outcomes. It is imperative for school counselors to recognize, understand, and address the unique needs of this population. This workshop will provide an overview of trauma, cognitive and behavioral responses of trauma manifestation in youth, and prevention and intervention strategies for K-12 school counseling professionals. Participants will be able to recognize and respond to different types of trauma and trauma responses in youth, and integrate trauma-informed practices throughout their school counseling program.

Wednesday, October 11th

Exact Times TBD
This Summit will conclude before 2:00pm, so you can attend both the VaDOE Summit and a VSCA Pre-Conference session.

Hampton Roads Convention Center

The 1st Annual Virginia School Counseling Leadership Summit is a gathering of school counseling leaders from all 132 divisions in Virginia to discuss state initiatives and school counseling-related issues. Dr. Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Virginia Department of Education will bring opening remarks. Space is limited for this event and only one person per school division (School Counseling Division Director or Designee) is invited to attend. Kemba SmithSaving Our Youth:
The Truth in Telling Our Stories

Kemba Smith

SPEAKER BIO: Growing up as an only child in Richmond, Virginia, Kemba Smith graduated high school and continued her education at the prestigious Hampton University. What happened to Kemba in her new campus environment was a nightmare, and led to a 24.5-year sentence in a federal prison. In December 2000, after serving 6.5 years, President Clinton commuted her sentence to time served.

Kemba is a graduate of Virginia Union University and was a past recipient for a two year Soros Justice Postgraduate Fellowship for advocates. She is a popular speaker at colleges, universities, high schools, juvenile facilities, churches and national conferences around the nation. She has received numerous awards and recognitions for her courage and determination to educate the public about the devastating consequences of current drug policies and for her commitment in serving young people.

ABOUT THIS SESSION: Kemba unique keynote presentation, Saving Our Youth: The Truth in Telling Our Stories, will discuss her experiences in sharing her story with students at middle and high schools, colleges and universities across the country.
